Before jumping into the many ways to re-purpose the #6 expanded polystyrene that you probably are having a heck of a time getting rid of I wanted to share a fun fact. Styrofoam is actually a trademarked term owned by Dow Chemical. Did you know that?
I'm sure you were hoping I would have a magical recycling solution for this relentless, undying foam. I don't, but I do have some pretty cool reuses for it.
1. Place in the bottom of planters to help with drainage and to save you from having to fill that entire pot with soil.
2. Donate peanuts to packing and mailing stores. They'll love you for it because that means they save some $$ too.
3. Start a green roof with EPS coolers as your planter boxes. Fun summer project, eh?
4. There are a select few recyclers in America so if you're feeling up to it, you can send it to them to be recycled, but it'll probably cost you.
5. And our favorite way to reuse EPS/Styrofoam is to spray it with d-Limonene (orange oil), let it slowly decompose into a sticky goo then use the goo for superglue. We read this and immediately did a little experiment with an egg carton to see if it works. It totally does -- but it takes a while for it to physically breakdown!

FYI: You are correct about Sytrofoam being a DOW product...but it is an extruded product...EPS is an expanded product...and are different.
